By Tim Parsons-
Deontey Wilder knocked out George Washington in the 5th round after trailing the challenger on points.
The WBC champion opted to take a cautious approach in his fifth defence of the title he won from Birnarde Stevens just over two years ago.
Washington was ahead on the judge’s card in the fifth round, but Wilder eventually delivered his explosive power, sending Washington crashing on he canvas, and Wilder retaining his world championship belt as expected.
Wilder, who last year sustained a terrible injury to his right hand appears to have made a full recovery through surgery.
” I am blessed with Alabama power. It doesn’t matter if it’s the first round or the twelfth round, nobody is safe in the ring with me, the champion declared.
UNBEATEN
Wilder, now unbeaten in 38 fights, 37 of them knockouts, went on to call out Joseph Parker, the man holding one of the other four belts- the WBO belt.
Parker defends that belt against Britain’s Hughie Fury (cousin of temporary retired Tyson Fury)in April, in what will be Fury’ s biggest test and opportunity to date.
UNIFY
Wilder is desperate to unify all the titles and believes a win against Parker will set the stage of a huge fight against the winner of Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko for the Info and WBA title on April 29.
Joshua is tipped to crush Klitschko when they meet, making him a two belt holder and the primary target for the WBC and WBO titleholders.
PRESTIGIOUS
Right now, Deontey Wilder holds the most prestigious of the four belts but knows he definitely needs to unify the belts to prove he is actually the best in the world.
