More than £10,000 in cash was also discovered in a bedroom wardrobe. The hearing found that PC Gherghel was aware of these items and “willfully failed to inquire further into the origin or purpose of the items and as to what either might be doing in her flat”, the Met said

Police discovered the stab vest had been used by her husband Ioan Gherghel, a 36-year-old Romanian bodybuilder, who would allegedly use the stab vest to impersonate a police officer.

The Met Police has dismissed PC Inga Gherghel without notice after a misconduct hearing concluded today, finding gross misconduct proven. There is no suggestion that PC Gherghel committed any crimes.

‘PC Gherghel willfully failed to enquire further in to the origin or purpose of the items and as to what either might be doing in her flat,’ said the police in a statement.

Mahmood’s wife Shareen Kashif, 30, was sentenced after she admitted concealing criminal property for her husband in April 2020.

She was given a 20-month sentence, suspended for 21 months, and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work following a hearing at Southwark Crown Court.

‘PC Gherghel willfully failed to enquire further into the origin or purpose of the items and as to what either might be doing in her flat,’ said the police in a statement.

Kashif, who was supported by family members in a packed public gallery in court, told police she only became aware of her husband’s illegal activities a few days before the raid on their house.

Kashif said she was ‘very angry’ when she became aware of her husband’s illegal activities, adding she had done a ‘silly and stupid thing’ in helping him conceal the money.

She initially was arrested when police discovered Encrochat messages between the London gang and a co-conspirator in Dubai – where Mahmood would holiday with the crime group.

Ioan Gherghel and Kashif Mohmood allegedly confiscated £850,000 from criminals in March 2021.

Ioan Gherghel and Kashif Mohmood allegedly confiscated £850,000 from criminals in March 2021.

They handed the money to 34-year-old gangster twins, Shabaz and Shazad Khan and their older brother Mohsin Khan.

Disgraced, and now former officer, Kashif Mahmood, of Woodcroft, Harlow, was also  struck off from the force after being  jailed for eight years in May when he admitted conspiracy to acquire criminal property and misconduct while in public office.

The 32-year-old used his position in the force to help an organised gang seize money from other criminals, the court heard. He dressed in his uniform and used marked and unmarked police cars to travel to locations where the gang knew “significant quantities of criminal cash” would be exchanged, and took it himself while pretending to be doing his duties.

The court heard he was a member of the “highly lucrative” operation which seized at least £850,000 from criminal couriers under the pretence of a “lawful exercise of his powers”. Another officer, PC Inga Gherghel has also been sacked and sentenced following a wider Met investigation.

PC Inga Gherghel was also fired after it was established that she turned a “blind eye” to signs her husband was responsible for the theft of stacks of cash from a criminal gang, Scotland Yard says. The Met Police has dismissed PC Inga Gherghel without notice after a misconduct hearing concluded on June 30, finding gross misconduct proven. There is no suggestion that PC Gherghel committed any crimes.

It comes after her husband Ioan Gherghel, 36, of Stratford, east London, was jailed for six years in May 2021 after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to acquire criminal property. He was one of six people – including former Met Police officer Mahmood – who were sentenced after admitting a range of offences following a wider Met investigation.

The misconduct panel, led by an independent legally qualified chair, heard evidence relating to the arrest of PC Gherghel’s husband on April 28, 2020. A search of the couple’s home found an MPS MetVest – force-issued body armour – inside a cupboard which had not been issued to PC Gherghel.

A shoebox containing more than £10,000 in cash was also discovered in a bedroom wardrobe. The hearing found that PC Gherghel was aware of these items and “willfully failed to inquire further into the origin or purpose of the items and as to what either might be doing in her flat”, the Met said.

Commander Marcus Barnett, in charge of policing at the Central East Command Unit, said: “It is the duty of any police officer to report criminality to police and PC Gherghel turned a blind eye to the actions of her husband.
