The World Boxing Council(WBC) is shirking their responsibility to ensure fairness and equal opportunity to fighters after continuously denying Dillian Whyte an opportunity fight for their title.
Dillian Whyte has long been complaining that the WBC are treating him very badly by refusing him his rightful opportunity to fight for their belt despite him having earned his opportunity. Whyte’s adviser Eddie Hearn’s has asked the organisation to consider his man’s next fight against Oscar Rivas on July 20 as a final eliminator for a mandatory position for the belt currently held by Deontey Wilder.
The Eye Of Media contacted the WBC in 2018, questioning them about their seeming dishonourable position on this matter, but they provided no straight response or defence. Whyte has been the no 1 contender for the title since 2017 and believes the WBC is protecting Deontey Wilder from the risk of defeat in the hands of the ‘body snatcher’ because of Whyte’s top pedigree. Whyte will present Wilder with a stiff challenge, although the WBC champion from Alabama who faces Dominic Breazeale on May 18 would be favourite to defeat Whyte in a challenging contest.
Now, the WBC president, Sulaiman has attempted to provide a flimsy explanation to ThaBoxingVoice by trying to set an unrealistic aim of matching the South Londoner with Tyson Fury as an eliminator. He said:
“When that fight [Wilder vs Fury rematch] falls through, the WBC goes back to the original mandate from the convention, saying that the winner or Wilder vs Fury has to do the mandatory against Breazeale.
“So we go back to then, and then we order Whyte against Fury – if both win their corresponding fights – for the mandatory position. “And that position was not accepted by Whyte, so the WBC is now handling Dillian Whyte’s appeal and we will resolve it in the coming weeks. “His petition to the WBC is to be made mandatory contender without fighting a final elimination.
“The WBC’s position was to order him and Fury to fight for the ‘interim’ title and for the mandatory position. “So we are trying to do several big fights – I’m sure that Whyte vs Fury is a huge fight as well – to create these great fights in the heavyweight division.
RUBBISH
The idea that Tyson Fury would need or be attracted to an eliminator with Dillian Whyte to fight Wilder is rubbish. Tyson Fury’s his impressive first performance against Deontey Wilder in December 2018, already earned him the right for a rematch. The only thing in the way of an immediate rematch is an £80m deal presenting to Fury by Bob Arum. The idea by the WBC for an eliminator between Dillian Whyte and Tyson Fury is therefore dubious. It was unfair and presents the WBC badly.
Whyte has earned his right for a title fight especially after his recent knock out defeat of Derek Chisora. A recent option suggested by Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn was to make his upcoming fight with Oscar Rivas on July 20 the new final eliminator.
“That’s a request they have made,” confirmed Sulaiman, “We officially received that request today.
“And that’s in the hands of the ‘Board of Governors’ and, for your information, the ‘Board of Governors’ is 34 reputable, honourable men from all over the world.“They vote and they decide the future of each division.” That’s unacceptable. The WBC should do the right thing and simply grant Whyte his chance for a title shot.
