Someone in Washington state overcame steep odds on Monday night to win more than a massive Powerball lottery jackpot.

After no Powerball winner for months, one ticket sold in the state of Washington matched all six numbers in Monday night’s drawing.

The Powerball jackpot climbed to an estimated $754.6 million Monday marking the fifth largest jackpot in Powerball history and ninth largest U.S. lottery prize ever, officials said.

The lucky winner can also choose the cash option for $407.2 million.

The jackpot continued to grow ever since it was last won on Nov. 19. Monday was the 34th drawing for the current jackpot, Powerball said.

Winning the grand prize would net the winner $747 million if they chose the annuity option, which would be paid out gradually over 29 years. The popular option – cash option – would give the winner $407.2 million before federal and state taxes.

Here are Powerball’s winning numbers for Monday:

Powerball winning numbers: 2/6/23
The winning numbers for Monday night’s drawing are 5, 11, 22, 23, 69,, and the Powerball is 7. The Power Play was 2X.

In addition to the jackpot winner, other million-dollar prizes were won in Monday night’s drawing. A ticket bought in Texas matched all five numbers except for the Powerball and added the Power Play worth $2 million.

Five tickets matched all five numbers except for the Powerball worth $1 million. They were purchased in Michigan and New York.

What are the chances of winning Powerball?
Playing Powerball can be exciting, but just don’t go spending those millions before you win. The game’s abysmal odds are designed to build big prizes drawing more players.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 292,201,338-to-1.

The odds to match all five white balls are 11,688,053-to-1.Powerball tickets cost $2 per play. To play, players pick (or opt to randomly receive) five numbers from one to 69 for the white balls, and one number from one to 26 for the red Powerball.

To win the jackpot, you need to match the numbers for all five white balls and the red Powerball.

Aside from the grand prize, depending on how many balls are matched, there are eight additional ways you can win a Powerball prize across the game’s non-jackpot tiers.

Tempted by the jackpot?: Here is how to play Powerball

Non-jackpot prizes start at $4 and go up to $1 million. For an extra $1, you can opt into “Powerplay” – which multiplies non-jackpot winning prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10.

Powerball says the 10X Powerplay is only available when the jackpot is $150 million or less. The game’s second-tier “Match 5” prize is capped at $2 million for the Powerplay.

An additional add-on feature called “Double Play,” which gives players another chance to match their numbers after each Powerball drawing, is available in some jurisdictions for $1 per play.

Lottery officials said in a statement early on Tuesday that a single ticket matched all six numbers and was worth 754.6 US dollars million (£621 million).

The full jackpot is for a winner opting for an annuity distributed in one immediate but partial payout followed by additional payments over 29 years that increase by 5% annually. The winner also can opt for a one-time cash payment of 407.2 US dollars million (£338 million).

Both prizes available are the amounts before taxes, Powerball said.

The lottery game’s website shows the jackpot for the next drawing on Wednesday has dropped to 20 million US dollars (£16.6 million).

Monday night’s win was the first Powerball jackpot win since November 19 2022.

That winless streak allowed the prize to grow larger and larger until it stood as the ninth-largest in US history.

Higher interest rates have allowed annuity payments to increase compared with earlier jackpots, when rates were lower. Most winners prefer the immediate cash prize.

The game’s odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to build big prizes drawing more players. That strategy certainly has worked recently, as someone in Maine won a 1.35 billion US dollars (£11.2 billion) Mega Millions prize in January and a California player hit a record 2.04 billion US dollars (£1.7 billion) Powerball jackpot last November. No one has claimed either of those prizes.
