A video showing a woman tearing down a Tube sign at Gareth Southgate station has sparked outrage among football fans.
The unnamed woman was seen attempting to rip down the sign tube sign with Gary Southgate’s name Transport for London (TfL) announced plans this week to rename the station in honour of the England manager for 48 hours after the Three Lions’ efforts at the World Cup.
Although the sign was due to come down last night, a TfL spokesman confirmed the woman was not a Tube staff member and did not have permission to carry out the act.
“Thousands of people visited the station in the last 48 hours to take selfies and celebrate the achievements of the England men’s football team this summer.”Several fans took to Twitter in anger after the video emerged, considering it an insult to the efforts of the England team. One person described the woman’s behaviour as “shocking”, while another added: “Southgate we still love you.”Another Twitter user called the incident “totally bang out of order”, with a different social media user adding: “Poor form all round.Mark Wild, TfL’s London Underground managing director, said of the renaming: “The great performance of the England team this summer brought people of all ages together in celebration.
“We’re delighted to be able to show our appreciation to Gareth and the team by renaming the station in his honour. No action has been taken against the woman for her behaviour which is believed to be a reaction against Southgate for England’s failed bid to get to the final in the world cup
