UK Government Announce Dispatch Of 200 Air Defense To Ukraine After Russia Strikes

By Ben Kerrigan-

The UK government has announced the dispatch of an additional 200 air defence missiles to bolster the country’s defences.

The move comes after what Ukrainian officials describe as the largest wave of Russian attacks since the conflict began, resulting in at least 30 fatalities and over 160 injuries.

The Ukrainian air force  reportedly intercepted 87 of the missiles and 27 of the Shahed-type drones.

In a post on social media, Mr Sunak said: ‘These widespread attacks on Ukraine’s cities show Putin will stop at nothing to achieve his aim of eradicating freedom and democracy.

‘We will not let him win’.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps emphasized that the package, valued at £4.6 billion, reaffirms Britain’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine.

The delivered weapons, including advanced short-range air-to-air missiles are intended to enhance Ukraine’s air defence capabilities, specifically targeting Russian drones and missiles.

Shapps condemned the Russian attacks as “murderous” and characterized them as a desperate attempt by President Vladimir Putin to regain momentum after substantial losses.

He highlighted that the delivered air defence systems, which have demonstrated remarkable accuracy against Russian drones, aim to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

The UK has previously provided substantial military assistance to Ukraine, including a squadron of Challenger 2 tanks, self-propelled AS90 guns, armoured vehicles, Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and long-range attack drones.

However, questions are emerging regarding the extent of Western support for Ukraine, particularly in the context of the war entering its third calendar year.

The recent announcement also coincides with debates about the wavering commitment of Western allies, as additional aid packages, including the most recent US support, require fresh approval from Congress.

Disagreements among European countries, exemplified by Hungary blocking a £43 billion (€50 billion) EU aid package, further complicate the situation.

Shapps urged the West to unite and intensify efforts to provide Ukraine with the necessary resources to prevail in the face of Russian aggression. He emphasized that the UK’s commitment remains steadfast, rejecting any suggestion of wavering resolve.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak echoed this sentiment, stating that the UK will not allow Putin to succeed in eradicating freedom and democracy.

The UK’s increased military support has sparked discussions about the nation’s level of involvement in Ukraine’s war.

Many observers consider the move  crucial to deterring Russian aggression, while others question the potential ramifications of deeper military engagement in the conflict. Opponents of Britain’s deepening involvement in the war say the UK should spend more of the money on boosting domestic wages rather than in bolstering the defence of Ukraine in the war against Russia.
