As of Sunday, May 12, eligible parents of children as young as 9 months old can apply for government-funded childcare, marking the second phase of this historic initiative set to revolutionize childcare accessibility across the nation.

Under this scheme, parents of children reaching 9 months old by August 31 can access 15 hours of funded childcare weekly, a provision expected to positively impact hundreds of thousands of families.

This expansion follows the successful implementation of the offer in April, which saw over 210,000 2-year-olds benefitting from government-funded places, enabling parents to navigate the delicate balance between career and family responsibilities.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the government’s commitment to alleviating financial burdens on families, asserting that the full expansion could save parents an average of £6,900 annually.

Echoing this sentiment, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan highlighted the collaborative efforts between authorities and the government to ensure seamless delivery of this vital service.

Recognizing the challenges faced by parents transitioning back to work, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Laura Trott underscored the significance of this initiative in providing families with access to high-quality childcare, essential for both child development and economic growth.

The expansion not only addresses the immediate needs of working families but also lays the groundwork for sustained support, with plans to increase childcare hours to 30 per week by September 2025.

Furthermore, adjustments to parental leave provisions extend the application window, providing ample time for parents to secure their childcare code well in advance of their return to work.

Despite the monumental scale of this undertaking, local authorities have risen to the occasion, reporting adequate capacity to meet parental demand.

Continuous collaboration between the government and local bodies ensures a seamless rollout, with additional investments and support earmarked to further bolster childcare infrastructure.

Jason Elsom, Chief Executive of Parentkind, lauded the initiative as a lifeline for families, acknowledging the sacrifices parents often make in navigating childcare costs.

With an emphasis on empowering parents to make informed choices regarding childcare providers, authorities urge those facing challenges in securing a place to reach out for assistance.
