A catholic journalist who sent insulting tweets to a transgender lawyer crossed the line, a High Court judge has ruled.
A judge has told a transgender lawyer, Stephanie Hayden and Catholic journalist Caroline Farrow(pictured above) that they had got involved in an “out of control” Twitter row. He ordered them not to mention each other online in future. Farrow appeared on Good Morning Britain in March to discuss her dispute with Ms Hayden, insisting on her right to refer to the transgender woman by her gender of birth, clearly insensitive to Hayden’s feelings.
Trans woman Stephanie Hayden was granted an injunction against Caroline Farrow after a “barrage” of tweets that misgendered Hayden, referring to her as a male, despite her legal change. At a High Court hearing in London, Mr Justice Bryan also asked Ms Hayden to not mention Mrs Farrow, and she agreed.
“. An interim injunction bans Mrs Farrow from mentioning Ms Hayden, in particular from “misgendering” her, by referring to her as male when she is legally female.
AVALANCHE
The judge said: “The tweeting… has got out of control. Each have said things in those tweets which, in the cold light of day in this court, I would anticipate they would rather wish they had not done.”
Representing herself, Ms Hayden told the judge the debate with Mrs Farrow had been going on since January. She claimed Mrs Farrow harassed her in a series of tweets, suggesting she was violent, misgendering her and posting a photograph of her.
Mrs Farrow denied this and her lawyers argued she had been subjected to “a positive avalanche of abuse over a number of months” from Ms Hayden.
Hayden told the court: “It was a clear attempt by the defendant to, I say successfully, whip up a social media storm.”
Mrs Farrow denied the claims and her lawyers argued she had been subjected to abusive tweets from Ms Hayden. Her barrister, Amanda Jones, said: “What the claimant has described as robust criticism of the defendant has been a positive avalanche of abuse over a number of months.”
The court heard both Ms Hayden and Mrs Farrow have previously been involved in other rows on Twitter over similar issues.
