Tyson Fury’s world heavyweight title defense against Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas later this month is reportedly set to be postponed after Tyson Fury tested positive for coronavirus , and there was an outbreak in the champion’s camp.
Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder were set to clash on February 24 , but the news is now set to see the fight postponed until October after a reported COVID-19 outbreak in the British boxer’s camp.
The trilogy fight for Fury’s WBC heavyweight championship was set to take place on 24 July in Las Vegas, but is now scheduled to be delayed following a coronavirus outbreak in Fury’s team.
The Athletic reported on Friday that “at least 10” people in Fury’s Las Vegas gym have caught the virus. And Fury himself has also tested positive for COVID-19, according to ESPN.
US-based boxing promoters, Top Rank, said it was monitoring the situation closely, with an announcement expected later today. Promoters are expected to see if there is any possible way to salvage the fight, with all avenues being explored. That seems unlikely, with self isolation rules, usually being for a minimum of 10 days, but this does not stop Fury from insisting on turning up with a very limited training camp if after 10 days in isolation , he subsequently passes a covid test, and is cleared to fight.
A court ruling in May forced Fury to ditch an immediate bout with Anthony Joshua and instead put his WBC title on the line in a third meeting with Wilder.
Tyson Fury’s third fight with Deontey Wilder was set for this month after an arbitrator ruled that the contract for their second fight posed legal obligations for Fury to grant him a rematch in the event of victory at the earliest possible time. It was a much anticipated meeting in boxing circles, after the big punching Wilder continue to peddle theories he was cheated in their first fight.
The extension will give Wilder more training time to be as solid as possible in his bid to regain the Wbc title he had successfully defended 10 times before Fury crashed his programme. Fury may also continue training privately if he doesn’t suffer symptoms from Covid. The clash between the two camps has been shifted far too many times- twice last year due to the pandemic itself, this being the third time in what could be seen as an ominous sign about this battle for world championship glory.
Joshua is set to defend his IBF, WBA and WBO titles against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in London on September 25. Both Fury and Wilder have not fought since they last met in February 2020 when the gypsy king stopped Wilder in seven brutal rounds.
