Social media company Twitter Inc. has extended policies designed to safeguard election integrity to the U.S. Census. It said it will prohibit posts containing false or misleading information about how to participate in the national survey.
Following wide criticisms about the ineffective monitoring of its platforms, twitter has responded to pressure from civil rights groups to raise their policies about the census to avoid foreign government manipulation which could affect elections.
Facecbook said in December that it would extend its misinformation policies to the U.S. Census, a nationwide survey conducted every decade that determines how many seats in the House of Representatives each state receives, how federal funding is allocated and this year will be used to redraw state and local voting districts.
Twitter also vowed to link to the Census website when people search on Twitter for questions related to the survey, it said in a blog post. Its platform has been used for all manner of wrong doings in past times, including racism and terrorist related activities/incitement. The social media giant has been doing its best to show how seriously it is responding to complaints about irresponsible and prohibited use of its platform.
