A tweet posted by president Trump that Covid-19 is less lethal than the flu is a commonly held view shared by many people in the American and British public, but that’s because many people don’t trust the official Covid-19 deaths. Those who do take Covid-19 seriously and believe it is more lethal than the common flu.
President Trump’s post in which he claimed that Covid-19 was “less lethal” than the flu,” was deleted by facebook and hidden by twitter in a show of disapproval to the president’s message. It came across as undermining the severity of Covid-19 . Trump has played Covid-19 down a lot, mixing the downplay with a pledge for America to produce the best testing in the world.
Trump knows the virus is real, but places it below the flu. His view is widely held by many members of the British and American public, but this offers no conclusion that the number of people who believe Covid 19 kills more people are not as many or more. Exhaustive research on the topic has not been done, but small sized surveys in the Uk and the U.S is already in the process for statistics sake.
The real issue from the perspective of social media networks is for the seriousness of the virus not to be undermined by comments by those made by the president. It is a view being whispered in very many circles whatever
Broad research gathering public opinion in the U.S and the U.K is in process, but, it so far is over 50% of a limited sample so far asked for their opinion are expressing views that the flu is kills more people.. The official view is not so.
Different
Medical experts from Ohio State University say that the two are different and that Covid-19 spreads much more quickly and has a longer incubation period. There is no clear consensus on which kills more ,people
In a statement by Facebook about their decision to remove the post said in a statement: ”We remove incorrect information about the severity of Covid-19, and have now removed this post,” said Andy Stone, policy communications manager at Facebook.
President Trump wrote that the U.S had “learned to live with” flu season, “just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!”Twitter hid the same message behind a warning about “spreading misleading and potentially harmful information”. Trump wrote the US had “learned to live with” flu season, “just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!
Trump wrote on both social media platforms earlier on Tuesday: “Flu season is coming up! Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu [sic].
“Are we going to close down our Country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!”
Debate
The post will stir up the debate in many circles, as to the relative seriousness of the flu and the deadly Covid-19 virus which has claimed so many lives. Facebook and Twitter were reacting to the president’s overall message to
The official position about Covid-19 , according to John Hopkins University, Covid-19 causes a lot more deaths than influenza, but many ordinary members of the American public actually share the president’s view. Highly rated charity fulfact.org puts it differently, and says Covid-19 has the potential to kill more people than the flu.
Potentially More Deadly
According to fullfact, org Covid-19 has the potential to kill more people and cause more hospitalisations than seasonal influenzas, but hasn’t done that yet in March, 2020, because so far it hasn’t spread as widely as seasonal flu.
The charity which has a cross party Board of Trustees and safeguards in place at every level of their organisation to ensure our neutrality, considers flu to be a deadly killer, but adds that many people have developed an immunity to it, unlike Covid-q9 which is a deadly killer.
”Seasonal flu is a major killer, which contributes to the rise in death rates during colder months, and overwhelms medical systems in the cold months of the winter, the charity states on its site. Dr Suzanna McDonald, national programme lead for influenza at Public Health England, warned: “Whilst the flu is common, it can be deadly for older adults, very young children and people with underlying health conditions.
”Globally, many people have built up immunity against seasonal flu strains, but COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity. That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease”.
Repeal Call
The President reacted to the removal by posting: “REPEAL SECTION 230!!!” At the time the law was written, site owners were concerned they could be sued if they exercised any control over what appeared on their sites, so the law includes a provision that says that, so long as sites act in “good faith,” they can remove content that is offensive or otherwise objectionable
The president’s post was a reference to the call for a law removing responsibility from social networks for the content posted by their users. It allows the firms to engage in “good-Samaritan blocking”, including the removal of content they judge to be offensive, harassment or violent.
