President Donald Trump is in new territory after Republicans lost an election in which the president had rallied very hard for them.
Democrats have taken a majority of the seats up for grabs in the House following the highly anticipated mid term elections on Tuesday. Although Republicans retained control of the Senate, the election defeat could have fresh implications on the nature and extent of Trump’s rule on America. Both chambers make up Congress and have considerable leverage in determining what bills are passed into law. The American president still retains unilateral power in relation to many aspects of policy including trading laws, but could face restrictions he finds undesirable in other areas.
The sworn in Democrats could potentially complicate the Mueller investigation in play over the investigation into Russian interference during the U.S 2016 elections. Several other complications could be set in motion with this new team, but the president did not appear fazed by the results which did not go his way.
Trump tweeted late Tuesday that the elections were a “tremendous success’,”Thank you to all!” ,he said, in an ironic dismissal of the disappointment that had just occurred under his watch. The dollar fell yesterday against both the euro and the pound
The election victory for Democrats came as they defended several Senate seats in deep red territory. Democrats picked up House districts in states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Michigan and Kansas on their way to a projected majority.
“Tomorrow will be a new day in America,” Pelosi said in a speech declaring victory late Tuesday night. ” … Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans. It’s about restoring the Constitution’s checks and balances to the Trump administration.”
