British prime minister, Theresa May has warned EU leaders to avoid a “moment of crisis” by getting the deal done in order to avoid a scenario in which the Uk never leaves the EU.
Her warning comes after EU officials said the Uk needed to produce acceptable ideas by today, Friday, to break the current impasse holding up official plans for Britain to leave the European Union by March 29th. Britain has been in multiple talks with EU officials over the troubling Irish back stop issue, all to no avail.
Geoffrey Cox yesterday said plans to solve the deadlock over the Irish backstop were “as clear as day”, with just days until MPs vote on the Brexit deal. Mps are scheduled to vote again on Tuesday about the current deal set by The EU. May says she understood the problems posed by the current deal, but urged Mps to appreciate the importance of honouring the referendum of 2016 .
“Back it and the UK will leave the EU,” she said. “Reject it and no-one knows what will happen. We may not leave the EU for many months. We may leave without the protections a deal provides, we may never leave at all.”
The problem is that it is not that simple. British Mps want a deal that works for the British people and leaves no nightmarish prospects for the future. There are just three weeks left to the official departure date of the UK from the EU. A plan B for the departure date to be delayed has been tabled by both EU chiefs and some government officials, but Ms May wants to avoid any delay at all costs. The weekend will come and go very quickly, but unless a solution to the backstop problem is found and agreed, the current crisis lingering over this political mess will become more worrying than ever.
