World tennis number one Novak Djokovic has recently unveiled a peculiar and enduring connection with nature, revealing that he has a “special relationship” with a tree in Melbourne.
The Serbian athlete, currently competing in the Australian Open, shared this revelation after a victorious match against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday night.
Djokovic, 36, disclosed that he has been visiting this particular tree for about 15 years. When questioned by a journalist about the seemingly unique bond, Djokovic responded, “There’s one particular tree that I’ve been having [a] special relationship with, so to say, in the last 15 years.”
Explaining the origin of this connection, Djokovic shared: “I got connected with that tree. I just liked it. I liked its roots and the trunks and branches and everything.
So I started climbing it years ago. That’s it. I just have a connection.” Despite being pressed, Djokovic refused to identify the specific tree, stating, “I cannot reveal which one, I’ll try to keep it discreet for myself when I’m there to have my own time.”
This revelation reveals Djokovic’s longstanding affinity for nature, emphasizing his love for every corner of Melbourne’s botanical gardens. He expressed appreciation for the city having such a park and nature oasis in the heart of the urban landscape.
Djokovic has previously shared glimpses of his tree-related experiences on social media, including a barefoot picture of himself standing in a tree in London back in 2018.
The revelation comes amid Djokovic’s pursuit of winning the Australian Open for the 11th time, marking a potential historic achievement.
However, his unique connection with nature is not the only noteworthy incident in his recent matches. Djokovic had a confrontation with a heckler during a crucial point in the match against Popyrin. Taking issue with a comment from a spectator, Djokovic boldly approached the stands, urging the individual to “come here and say it to my face.”
Djokovic’s unconventional relationship with a tree invites reflection on the diverse rituals and practices athletes adopt to find solace and focus in the midst of high-stakes competitions.
