A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous body harm following a stabbing near the British Museum.
The Metropolitan Police say a man suffered a “stab wound” to his arm in the incident.
It took place on the junction of Great Russell Street and Museum Street, near to the attraction’s entrance.
The man’s condition is currently being “assessed” in hospital, according to police.
Officers have described the stabbing – which sparked an evacuation of the museum – as an “isolated incident”.
A forensic tent has erected on the pavement on the museum side of Great Russell Street, just metres from the entrance.
The police scene is expected to be in place for much of today, according to the force.
The junction of Great Russell Street and Museum Street is close to the entrance of the famous museum in central London.
The British Museum is the UK’s third most visited tourist attraction, with more than 4 million visitors last year.
A British Museum spokesperson said: “The museum was closed this morning due to an incident following a member of the public being attacked nearby.
“The Museum’s security team supported at the scene until the emergency services arrived.
“Visitors were evacuated from the museum as a precaution, and we wish the victim a full and swift recovery.”
The spokesperson added that the museum heighten security, including a raised search operation, as a precaution following the incident.
