London mayor Sadiq Khan has urged the Briitsh government to make face coverings mandatory on public transport as the UK continues to average more than 40,000 confirmed coronavirus cases a day for over a week.
The rate of infection in England is estimated to have increased from between 1.0 and 1.2 to 1.1 and 1.3 official figures have shown, this being the highest in the Uk since Janauary, according to official records, but many londoners are more concerned with true death rates than they are about infection rates.
The Office Of National Statistic announced that there had been more than 43,000 new Covid cases recorded in UK
There have been a further 43,467 cases of coronavirus reported in the UK today, according to the latest government figures.
And there have been another 186 deaths of people who had tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days
A drammatic increase in infection rates is a worrying factor in any country where people with underlying health conditions exist.
Mr Khan said in a statement the the “deadly virus has not gone away and this winter we’re facing both flu and Covid”.
He also called on eligible Londoners to get their booster vaccine and flu jab as well as continuing to wear a mask where needed. “The worst thing we can do is to lower our guard, be complacent and underestimate the risk these viruses pose to all of us,” he added.
