Russia has declared a state of emergency in the southwestern Voronezh region after successfully thwarting an overnight drone attack from Ukraine. The foiled attack resulted in damage to several buildings and injuries, including a child.
Voronezh Mayor Vadim Kstenin,(pictured) in a Telegram announcement, revealed the imposition of a state of emergency, emphasizing the need for swift decision-making in response to the security incident.
Concurrently, Voronezh Governor Aleksandr Gusev, also on Telegram, reported that a young girl sustained injuries from fragments of a downed drone, causing cuts to her arm, leg, and neck. Both officials noted damage to residential buildings in the aftermath of the attack.
The Russian Defense Ministry, in a statement, disclosed that air defense systems successfully neutralized five and intercepted three Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the Voronezh region. Additionally, four UAVs were intercepted over the Belgorod region. The ministry claimed the destruction of three UAVs during an attempted attack on Russian territory, providing a timeframe between 1:50 a.m. and 2:50 a.m. local time.
While Russia has made explicit statements about the incident, Ukrainian officials have not yet issued comments or responses.
Tensions between Moscow and Kyiv have escalated in recent weeks, marked by mutual accusations of airstrikes.
The conflict intensified in late December with a significant air attack in Ukraine, resulting in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy describing it as the “heaviest attack” since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The situation further escalated on January 1, with Russian President Vladimir Putin vowing not to let such incidents go unpunished following a raid on the Russian city of Belgorod, which claimed 25 lives and left numerous others wounded..
