British comedian and former television presenter Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a high-profile trial at Southwark Crown Court. The convictions relate to allegations involving four women and incidents dating between 2004 and 2009. The verdict marks a dramatic development in the criminal proceedings against the 51-year-old entertainer, who was remanded in custody following the jury’s decision and warned by the judge that he faces a significant custodial sentence. The verdict represents one of the most consequential moments of his public and personal life.

Brand showed no discernible reaction as the verdicts were read out. He had similarly showed no emotion throughout the trial, except on one occasion when he foolishly let out a laugh when his wife said they had many friends, when she was giving a character witness for him. His wife, Laura, was seen holding hands with a female companion in the public gallery. She appeared visibly distressed, breathing heavily and seemingly fighting back tears as the proceedings unfolded. Brand was subsequently escorted from the dock by two female prison guards and taken to the cells while arrangements were made for his legal team’s bail application.

Judge Mr Justice Joel Bennathan made clear the seriousness of the convictions, telling Brand that he had been found guilty of several offences, including rape, and that a substantial prison sentence was inevitable. “The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term,” the judge told him. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Monday. Given the the depth pf the allegations by six different women, an acquittal on all charges would have been miraculous. the former comedian never expressed horror or disbelief during trial at any of the grave allegations made against him. The Essex born former television star when asked early in the trial how he felt, told a Sky reporter that the case was  extraordinary and stressful, adding that it was an exploration of truth and justice, and that he was ”praying for everybody involved’. Finally, after three weeks of hearing evidence, the jury unanimously reached verdicts on the four counts.

Brand, 51, was described  as a ruthless, calculated and manipulative sexual predator who  raped women in a hotel room, a bar toilet and  his luxurious London home. He was also accused of sexually assaulted women in front of his entourage at their workplaces, at a radio station and TV studio. one of the alleged rapes about which he was acquitted  occurred after a Labour party conference, after which he offered to introduce the alleged victim to his mother, and sought to assure her that he was clean with no STD’s. The alleged victim said she had nightmares of being pregnant.

Jurors do not explain how they reach their verdicts, which includes reasons they do not find guilty on any of the counts. The presiding judge made clear at the end of the trial that he would only accept unanimous verdicts, making any failure to reach a unanimous  guilty verdict, effectively not guilty. The jury’s decision followed deliberations over seven charges brought against Brand in connection with allegations made by six women. The four guilty verdicts concern the following incidents.

1. Rape – Count Six (2009)

The rape conviction relates to an allegation involving a woman Brand met after one of his comedy performances at the Hammersmith Apollo. The woman told the court that she initially had consensual sexual encounters with Brand. However, she alleged that during a subsequent encounter at his home, he turned her onto all fours, removed a condom and anally raped her despite her repeatedly telling him to stop. She described the experience as extremely painful, and described there being blood everywhere. This allegation was one of the most believable, mainly due to the admission of consensual sex followed by the  allegation of forced anal sex. The jury found Brand guilty of this rape charge.

2. Sexual assault – Count Three (2004)

This conviction concerns an incident at a Soho bar, where Brand was accused of deliberately grabbing a woman’s breasts without her consent. The complainant alleged that Brand touched her breasts during a party before taking her towards the toilets, where further serious sexual allegations were made. The jury found him guilty of the sexual assault charge.

3. Sexual assault – Count Five (2004–2005)

Another conviction relates to an allegation involving a woman who worked at Choice FM. She told the court that Brand approached her during the working day and subjected her to unwanted sexual touching. The allegation included kissing her and touching her breasts and bottom without her consent. She described being pinned against a wall and having to push him away. The jury found Brand guilty of this count of sexual assault.

4. Sexual assault – Count Seven (2009)

The fourth conviction concerns a woman who was working on a project for Channel 4. She alleged that Brand’s colleagues told her he would only continue working on the project if she gave him a massage. The woman told the court that Brand subsequently placed his head in her lap, with his nose and mouth in the area of her groin, leaving her shocked and deeply uncomfortable. The jury found Brand guilty of this sexual assault. Although the verdicts represent a significant legal defeat for Brand, the jury did not find him guilty of every charge brought against him.He was acquitted of two counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. One of the rape allegations related to an incident in 1999 during a Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. Another concerned an alleged incident in Soho in 2004. The attempted indecent assault charge related to an allegation made by a former MTV employee, who said Brand grabbed her arm and attempted to drag her towards a male toilet in 2001.

Following the announcement of the verdicts, attention quickly turned to Brand’s immediate future and the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence. Mr Justice Bennathan addressed the defendant directly, explaining that the seriousness of the offences meant a substantial custodial sentence would follow. The judge said he was not minded to grant bail and indicated that Brand would be remanded in custody. He subsequently allowed defence barrister Ian Winter time to consider making a bail application. Brand was taken from the courtroom by two female guards as the proceedings continued. The sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Monday, when the court is expected to determine the punishment for the offences of which he has been convicted.

The legal difficulties facing Brand may not end with the conclusion of this trial. The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that investigations into separate rape allegations involving two additional women remain ongoing. According to a police spokesperson, Brand has previously been interviewed under caution in connection with those allegations.

Files relating to both complainants have been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, with detectives continuing to work closely with prosecutors as further investigative enquiries are undertaken.  Russell Brand was one of Britain’s most recognisable entertainment personalities for years, building a career through stand-up comedy, television presenting, radio broadcasting and appearances in Hollywood films. His outspoken personality, provocative humour and controversial public image made him a familiar figure in British popular culture. However, his career faced mounting scrutiny following the publication of allegations of sexual misconduct in 2023, which prompted investigations and eventually criminal proceedings.

Throughout the trial, Brand denied the charges and maintained that he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity. His defence challenged the accounts presented by the complainants and questioned the reliability of allegations made many years after the alleged incidents. The prosecution, meanwhile, argued that the women’s accounts demonstrated a pattern of sexual misconduct and behaviour involving the abuse of power.
