Royal Family New Social Media Guidelines Insists On Courtesy And Respect

By Lucy Caulkett-

Britain’s royal family has set out new guidelines that demand  social media users to show “courtesy, kindness and respect” when interacting with its online posts, after repeated cases of online abuse directed at Duchesses Meghan and Kate.

The family released a set of guidelines for “anyone engaging with our social media channels” on Monday, banning any “obscene, offensive, threatening, abusive, hateful” and discriminatory posts. The royal family said it can delete, block or report social media users who make comments on its channels that do not meet new guidelines published Monday. They come amid recent steps taken to combat internet trolls and racists who have targeted Meghan in the past on social media, subjected her to abuse

The welcome guidelines  published today  insists that comments must not “contain spam, be defamatory of any person, deceive others, be obscene, offensive, threatening, abusive, hateful, inflammatory or promote sexually explicit material or violence,” or “promote discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age.” Neither must they be irrelevant, unintelligible, contain advertising or beach the terms of the social media platform.

Royal representatives are tasked with the interesting but challenging job  of monitoring all communication in relation to social media connected to the Royals. They have often had the displeasure of reading multiple posts filled with hate and designed to unsettle Meghan Markle and spark a divide between her and Katie Middleton, who is married to Harry’s brother,  Prince William. Markle has been the subject of intense media interest, especially because of the fractious dimensions of her wider family in America. However, with Morgan being far into her pregnancy, the emphasis  is being placed on kind and loving words. The guidelines apply to the social media channels run by the Royal Family, Clarence House and Kensington Palace.

All members of the Royal family have a large following, with Clarence House and Kensington Palace together pulling in over 18 million  followers on Twitter and Instagram together. Anyone who wants to remain a follower would have to abide by the rules or be blocked. The new guidelines state: “The aim of our social media channels is to create an environment where our community can engage safely in debate and is free to make comments, questions and suggestions.”
