The Eye Of Media is embarking on research aimed at finding out the advantages and disadvantages of single sex grammar schools, in a bid to understand and establish its strengths and weaknesses.
The research will involve speaking to multiple pupils in the UK who attended same sex grammar schools, and those currently attending but at the final stages of their grammar school experience.
The debate surrounding the effectiveness and impact of single sex education has been a topic of interest in the field of education for decades. Same sex grammar schools are institutions that exclusively admit students of one gender, either all boys or all girls.
Proponents of the system argue that single-sex grammar schools can foster an environment conducive to improved academic performance, reduced gender stereotypes, and increased self-esteem.
They add that fewer social distractions also leads to a more concentrated and focused learning environment.
Supporters of same sex grammar schools say such schools can create an environment free from gender stereotypes, where students are encouraged to pursue academic interests without worrying about conforming to traditional gender roles.
They further believe that single-sex grammar schools are believed to adopt teaching strategies that cater specifically to the learning styles and strengths of each gender, potentially enhancing academic performance.
Single sex schools are also said to remove gender distractions, making students feel more comfortable pursuing subjects and activities typically associated with the opposite gender.
Fewer social distractions also leads to a more concentrated and focused learning environment.
Educators in single-sex schools can design teaching strategies that specifically address the learning styles and needs of their students, which may differ between genders. This tailored approach can potentially lead to better academic outcomes.
Confidence
Some students may feel more comfortable expressing themselves in a single-sex environment, leading to increased self-confidence and participation in class discussions and extracurricular activities.
Advocates of same sex grammar schools argue that without the presence of the opposite gender, students may face fewer distractions, leading to improved focus on academics and better classroom discipline.
Single-sex schools can also offer students strong role models of their own gender, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.
Critics argue that segregating students by gender can lead to limited social interactions, potentially hindering the development of crucial social skills necessary for adulthood.
They also argue that instead of challenging stereotypes, same-sex grammar schools may inadvertently perpetuate them by emphasizing gender differences and segregating activities based on gender.
In a coeducational society, students need exposure to diverse perspectives and interactions. Single-sex grammar schools may not adequately prepare students for future interactions in mixed-gender workplaces and communities.
A number of headteachers , teachers and students from at least a dozen same sex grammar schools will be interviewed as part of the research to begin from next month until the end of September.
The levels of focus and commitment of pupils, both past and present will be included in the research.
The research aimed as establishing the pros and cons of grammar schools will see how some of the benefits can be included in state schools.
