King Charles officially announced the new title of Princess Of Wales for Kate Middleton, his daughter in Law, the first person to bear the prestigious title since the late Princess Diana, in his first speech since the Queen’s death.
In a clear sign of a new era following the death of her Majesty, the Queen, the new king also passed his own former title of Princ to his son, Prince Charles.
Prince William now becomes the Prince Of Wales, inheriting the opulent Duchy of Cornwall estate, having become the new heir apparent to the throne, and the 25th Duke of Cornwall.
Along with this title, Prince William automatically inherits the Duchy of Cornwall, which has been an income stream for his father for more than half a century. This is thanks to the ownership of a landed estate of more than 52,000 hectares (128,000 acres), which also makes him one of England’s biggest landowners.
The Duchy of Cornwall owns land across 20 counties in England and Wales – the majority of it not in Cornwall – stretching from Devon to Kent, and Carmarthenshire to Nottinghamshire.
He said: “As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades. Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty.
“With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given.”
Sharing Kate and William’s reaction, a royal source said: “The couple are focussed on deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time
“The Prince and Princess of Wales will approach their roles in the modest and humble way they’ve approached their work previously
“The new Princess of Wales appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.”
Kate and William’s official Twitter account @kensingtonroyal changed to reflect the changes.
Charles also used the speech to praise his wife Camilla and “express his love” for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Speaking of the Sussexes, he said: “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
He praised Camilla’s dedication to the royal family and the Monarchy, saying: This is also a time of change for my family. I count on the loving help of my darling wife, Camilla. In recognition of her own loyal public service since our marriage seventeen years ago, she becomes my Queen Consort. I know she will bring to the demands of her new role the steadfast devotion to duty on which I have come to rely so much.”
The Queen had endorsed her son’s wish for Camilla to become Consort, using her Accession Day speech to say she wanted Charles’s wife to be by his side. The new highly ranked title is believed to be a problem for Prince Harry, who still feels angry that she now holds the highly esteemed position which would have been his mum’s had she still been alive and with his father. It’s a thorny issue, which his brother, now the Prince of Wales, has accepted, given she is the woman the new king loved and chose, even when married to his mother.
The Prince of Wales would have had his own private emotional moments about the historical complexity oftoday’s realit, but has had to come to terms with the collective decision of of the monarchy, of which he has always been an important member.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly did not mingle with the new Prince and Princess of Wales yesterday, except for the usual courteous hellos and goodbyes. Their differences cannot evaporate over night, but this new phase in the wider family is a major transition from one dispensation to anothet.
Charles , who yesterday expressed a day of sadness following news of his mothert’s death again with a moving tribute to his mum, who passed away on Thursday afternoon.
He said: “To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you.
“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May ‘flights of angels sing thee to thy rest’.
It’s a new chapter in the history of the Monarchy.
