U.S. President Donald Trump wants the Uzbek immigrant accused of killing eight people to face the death penalty
The 29, year old sicko told investigators that “he felt good about what he had done” and asked for permission to display the flag of the militant group Islamic State in his hospital room.
Trump initially suggested sending Saipov to the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba where multiple detainees are held, but yesterday admitted that the move was riddled with complicated.
“Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system…,” Trump said on Twitter on Thursday. A later tweet by the president added, “…There is also something appropriateabout keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!”
Saipov faces two charges, one of which carries the death penalty if the government chooses to seek it, Manhattan acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said.
Speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump said, “We also have to come up with a punishment that is far quicker and far greater than the punishment these animals are getting right now.”
The U.S. needs “quick” and “strong” justice, he added, “because what we have right now is a joke, and it’s a laughingstock.
VIOLENCE
Saipov is charged with one count of violence and destruction of motor vehicles causing the deaths of eight people and one count of providing material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization – Islamic State, also known as ISIS.
The maximum penalty for the first is death; the maximum for the second is life in prison, according to the Manhattan U.S Attorney
Saipov waived his rights to remain silent, avoid self-incrimination and have an attorney present. Instead, the maniac agreed to speak to investigators from his bed at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, where he was receiving treatement after being shot by a police officer.
The lone woolf said he was particularly motivated by a video where Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi – the leader of Islamic State – exhorted Muslims in the United States .
Investigators found thousands of ISIS-related propaganda images and videos on Saipov’s cellphone, and have been investigating a number of contacts made by the mass murderer. Among the propaganda found were video clips showing ISIS prisoners being beheaded, run over by a tank and shot in the face.
Saipov deserves to be dealth with ruthlessly for his heartless and unrepentant act of evil. U.S prosecutors cannot be blamed if they seek the death penalty a smany Americans will not oppose it. Terrorism is intolerable in today’s modern world and must continue to be fought on every front. Sending him to Guantanomo Bay military prison may be a soothing interim punishment, but the high profile nature of his horrendous crime will highlight some of the unjustified and illegal practices known to occur there.
Five terrorists linked to the 2001 World Trade Center attacks — including the “architect,” Khalid Sheik Mohammed are still awaiting trial at Guantanamo Bay, with no progress on the case expected until 2019.
