Former Mirror editor Piers Morgan has claimed he will “maintain a dignified silence” until the Prince Harry’s phone hacking case has concluded, after the Duke of Sussex took aim at the presenter in his testimony this week.
The outspoken British television presenter was cornered in the street by Channel 4 News reporters, Mr Morgan insisted that he “can’t say anything until this is over”.
Pressed again for this thoughts, he added: “I would love to, as you can probably imagine, but unusually I’m going to maintain a dignified silence until it is all over.”
Piers Morgan has found himself at the centre of strong allegations made by Prince Harry of phone hacking and unauthorized access to voicemails during his tenure as editor of the Daily Mirror in the 90’s.
Harry told the High Court he felt sick at the idea of Piers Morgan listening to his mother’s phone calls and accused the former press editor of pursuing a vendetta through intimidation of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle , insisting that he was always going to hold the former Good Morning Britain presenter to account.
The phone hacking scandal that shook the British media industry exposed unethical practices employed by some newspapers to gather information. It began in 2011 when it was revealed that the News of the World was hacking the phones of politicians, celebrities, members of the Royal Family and the public.
In the case of Piers Morgan, allegations have been made regarding his involvement in authorizing the hacking of voicemails, potentially including those of Princess Diana. While Morgan vehemently denies these allegations, the gravity of the claims and the public interest surrounding them cannot be understated.
Journalists are expected to adhere to ethical standards, which include respecting privacy, truthfulness, and responsible reporting. Engaging in or authorizing phone hacking violates these principles and undermines public trust in the media.
Some observers have said that Morgan’s decision to maintain a “dignified silence” in the face of such serious allegations can have long-lasting effects on Morgan’s reputation, although it is quite possible he has been advised to stay silent by his lawyers.
The British public had long moved away from the phone hacking scandal until this fresh suit issued by Prince Harry and a number of other celebrities which has brought it back to the fore of its consciousness. casts a shadow on the broader journalism industry. It reinforces public scepticism and distrust towards journalists and their methods.
The case continues to raise questions about the overall integrity of tabloid journalism and highlights the need for stricter regulations and ethical guidelines. The scandal has already prompted inquiries and reforms in the media industry to prevent future privacy breaches and unethical practices, and there is no evidence to suggest it still occurs today.
However, celebrities and even subjects of public interest will be ever wary of the possibility it still goes on, since many ordinary people hold the view that a camel never changes its spots.
