The Pentagon was placed on a temporary lockdown following reports of gunshots being fired at a platform at a nearby metro bus station.
The lockdown was soon lifted as of 12:15 p.m, local time, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency said. The Metro entrance remained closed.
The Pentagon Force Protection Agency said in a statement: “The scene of the incident is secure. It is still an active crime scene.” Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.
Multiple people needed assistance, the Arlington County fire department said. It wasn’t immediately clear if they were shot.
The scary incident occurred outside the building on the Metro Bus platform, which is a major entrance to the Pentagon used by thousands of personnel every day entering and leaving the building. The bus platform is used by multiple bus lines in the area.
Two people on the scene are currently being given CPR, while The condition of this person, and the nature of their injuries, is not yet known. The motive behind the shooting is also not clear, but all precautionary measures have been taken following the news.
The Pentagon has issued the following statement through its official Twitter account:
The Pentagon currently is on lock down due to an incident at the Pentagon Transit Center. We are asking the public to please avoid the area. More information will be forthcoming.
Metro trains are temporarily bypassing the Pentagon station for the duration of a police investigation, with the bus platform usually used by multiple bus lines in the surrounding area.
The proximity of the shooting to the Pentagon was of particular concern du e to the possibility the gun man may have had plans to cause harvoc at the heart of the U.S government itself, but found himself in an altercation enroute to there.
