North Korea has demanded a peace treaty from the United States, if any serious steps to de-nuclearization is to occur.
The United States has made, and continues to make, “specific proposals for starting and proceeding to the end point of fully verified denuclearization,” including a timeline, these sources say.
The deadlock between the two nations threatens to make nonsense of previous declarations by U.S President Donald Trump that his June summit with Kim Jong Un was productive and led to the world being a safer place. The document produced following the meeting of the two world leaders was unspecific and not binding, and now appears to have made a mockery of those talks.
Negotiations between the United States and North Korea will require a ”bold move” by Washington’s willingness to make a “bold move” and agree to a peace treaty with Pyongyang, according to insiders in the North Korean government. Kim Jong Un says positive steps towards denuclearization will materialize only if the U.S ease existing sanctions and work towards a peace deal.
Pyongyang says he has already made positive steps to demonstrate good faith, including a halt in missile testing and the repatriation of US remains, arguing that the U.S is backtracking.
The alleged backtrack is not the direct fault of Trump, according to the North Korean defence ministry, but initiated by “some high-level officials within the US administration,” who it were going against the President’s will. The U.S government has not responded to the claims, but it is believed that moves will be taken to address them in due course. Until then, the official position is that the U.S and North Korean June meeting has not been fruitful, until both sides have a mutual understanding of their agreement and take steps to execute them accordingly.
