Born in Weston-Super-Mare, Dando rose to prominence in the late 1980s as a presenter on BBC News broadcasts after a few years of cutting her teeth doing the same for regional programmes.
Airing on the BBC, Crimewatch focused on a variety of unsolved crimes and featured reconstructions of each and interviews with both detectives and those directly involved with featured incidents.
As one of the show’s presenters, it would later be suggested that Dando’s murder was the result of someone who was negatively impacted by a case featured on the show, a view not yet supported by any evidence.
Dando was murdered on the doorstep of her home in Fulham, London, on the morning of 26 April, 1999.
After returning home, the well loved presenter was approached from behind whilst on her doorstep, pushed to the ground and shot in the temple at point-blank range, killing her instantly.
Eight months after the one shot killing, the police announced they were after a stalker rather than a professional hit-man. They arrested rapist Barry George because he lived near Dando and was a stalker who had been fined for trespassing on property of Diana, Princess of Wales.
He was eventually released, after police found no evidence to pin him to the killing.
The tragic case’s enduring allure, coupled with Netflix’s penchant for gripping storytelling, makes “Who Killed Jill Dando?” a compelling addition to the true crime genre.
As the countdown to its release continues, audiences are poised to embark on an engrossing journey to unravel the mysteries surrounding one of Britain’s most enduring unsolved crimes.
