Muslim Community Wrong To Blame Media For New Zealand Terror Killings

By Tony O'Riley-

The Muslim community  are wrong to blame the media for terrorist attack that took place in  a New Zealand mosque, killing 49 people. Some Muslim figures have today been trying to point at the media because of the attack t not just at the attackers but also the media, politicians, and other public figures for “demonising” Muslims.

Mohammed Mahmoud-an Imam- said the security and peace of Muslims was under threat. He said people in power were partly responsible for “perpetuating the narrative of otherness of a group who are perceived as infiltrators, and the dehumanisation and the vilification of Muslims who, by and large, are peaceful, law-abiding, loving citizens”.

However, these claims are a wrong expression of the real situation. The lone killer,  28 year old Australian Brent Tarrant in New Zealand acted out of his own anger and irrational emotions in deciding to arm himself with a gun to kill Muslims. New Zealand prime minister, Jacinda Arden, revealed  that the main suspect in the mosque shooting that killed 49 people in New Zealand on Friday had five guns and a gun licence.

Like everybody in the world, the crazed killer of Thursday’s atrocities was aware of the terrorist actions that have been inflicted by a number of Islamic extremists in the past few years, and acting of his own mind. He is an extremist, and his actions has nothing to do with the media or its coverage of terrorist attacks. When a terrorist attack occurs, it has to be covered and the media will express their outrage at those attacks, in the same way as the New Zealand attack has been condemned.

London mayor, Sadiq Khan added his opinion to the those being expressed in anger.

Mr Khan said:

“There is a responsibility on all of us to be very careful in the language we use, and the messages we amplify,” the mayor said. “There are some people in our city, in our country, who fan the flames of hatred.” Oh , please! Blame the British public for the multiple killings carried out by a crazed lone man in New Zealand. The killings were awful, and our sympathies and condolences and sympathies are with the family and well wishers of the dead.

But the truth is that this evil murder has nothing to do with any narratives in the media. It had everything to do with a crazy angry man who was reacting idiotically to terrorism, and was stupid enough not to know that the terrorist acts of Islamic fanatics does not speak for all Muslims.

The solidarity demonstrated by the Muslim Community today that saw Muslims  gather at an East London Mosque and place posters saying ”No to Islamophobia”  shows the sorrow felt by British Muslims at news of this senseless killings.

It could have happened to them, so their solidarity in sorrow at the sad murder of their Muslim brothers and sisters is a solemn moment we should all share with them.
