A murder inquiry is underway after a man was killed in Sheffield and several others injured when a car struck a crowd of people. The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 2 pm in the Burngreave area of the city.
South Yorkshire Police have reported that a 46-year-old man lost his life at the scene, and his next of kin are being provided with support by officers. In addition to the fatality, one of the injured individuals is in serious condition in the hospital.
The violence prompted a swift response from law enforcement, resulting in the arrest of two individuals. A 23-year-old man has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder, while a 55-year-old man is detained on suspicion of attempted murder.
The incident occurred in College Close, where officers were initially responding to reports of violence and disorder. During the ongoing response, a car collided with a group of people, intensifying the tragic situation.
DCI Andrew Knowles, the senior investigating officer, revealed that a significant police cordon is in place. He stated, “We’ll be patrolling throughout the night to offer reassurance and to speak to anyone who may hold information or feel concerned.”
The investigative efforts include CCTV and house-to-house inquiries to gather more details about the events leading up to the violence and the subsequent collision.
