Boxing mad Tyson Fury’s recent decision to take on Oleksandr Usyk in an undisputed heavyweight superfight in Saudi Arabia was motivated by a substantial payday.
Analysts are concerned that Tyson Fury, whose net worth is currently estimated a £65m, is now more focused on being wealthy than on establishing a legacy.
Tyson’s father, John Fury, who revealed that Tyson has become “money-mad” after meeting wealthy Saudi Arabians and realizing the enormity of their fortunes.
John Fury, aged 59, disclosed that Tyson had been left feeling “bothered” and “inept” after encountering the Saudi millionaires, recognizing that his multi-million-pound wealth paled in comparison to their immense riches.
According to John Fury, Tyson has set his sights on becoming the world’s richest boxer, fueled by the desire to attain a financial status that rivals the Saudis’.
John Fury candidly stated, “He’s gone round and seen them and thought ‘hang on, I’ve got chicken feed compared to these boys, and I think it’s bothered him because he’s realized his money isn’t a lot of money.”
He elaborated on Tyson’s shifting priorities, saying, “All of a sudden, click, he’s gone money-mad, you know, thinking he can compete with the Saudis.”
Fury is set to engage in a lucrative crossover clash with UFC star Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia on October 28. This bout is anticipated to be another significant financial windfall for Fury.
John Fury emphasized the transformative effect of being in the company of individuals with incomprehensible wealth.
He explained, “Being around people with trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars, it’s going to make you think about money yourself. They have made Tyson feel inept with his few quid!”
While the desire for financial gain may be driving Tyson Fury’s recent choices, John Fury clarified that it’s not about spending the money he already has, as it’s more than he could ever exhaust.
Instead, Tyson appears to be motivated by the ambition to be recognized as the richest boxer in the world, even surpassing Floyd Mayweather’s financial legacy.
This money drive could mean the gypsy hanging his gloves if he prevails against Usyk when they finally meet in the ring.
However, boxing critics believe while unification of the heavyweight division may cement his legacy as the best heavyweight of his time, this would be open to debate, and would not necessarily make him the best of all times.
Critics believe he may need to defend against Zhilei Zhang to even prove to be the best of his generation.
