A pay gap between male and female senior academics is shameful.
A report from the University and college Union (UCU) has confirmed significant gaps at senior level coupled with under-representation of women in top posts has pushed up the difference in wages in higher education.
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt said : at this rate , it will take 49 years to close the acadic gender gap.
” That women are under- represented in the higher management grades us contributing to the overall 12 percent gender pay gap for academic staff”.
” We are now submitting local equal pay audits at Universities and want institutions to analyse and address their gender pay gaps “.
The claim is disturbing, shocking and shameful. Universities have a litany of intellectual lecturers and leaders, all of whom are too aware of the shared values of equality of treatment . The idea that women are discrimation against at high professional academic levels is shocking beyond belief.
More shocking is the claim in the report that women are ” under- represented in the higher management grades contributing to he overall 12 percent gender pay gap for academic staff’.
Local equal pay audits are now being submitted at Universities , with requests for institution to ” analyse and address their gender pay gaps”, the report states. According to he report , one in four university professors are female. That gap needs to be addressed in order to achieve a level playing field field.
