A 21-year-old medical student from Mexico, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for planning to rape a young girl in Norwich.
Torres-Vargas, (pictured)who had temporarily come to London for a student exchange, initiated an online conversation with an individual he believed to be the uncle of a 10-year-old girl.
Unbeknown to him, this “uncle” was an undercover police officer operating under the alias ‘Uncle Jim.’ During their exchanges, Torres-Vargas openly expressed his sexual interest in children and shared indecent images of minors.
The situation escalated when Torres-Vargas arranged to travel to Norwich with the intent of sexually assaulting the young girl. On June 28, upon his arrival at Norwich Rail Station, law enforcement promptly arrested him, seizing his devices in the process.
A subsequent examination of his belongings revealed over 1,000 indecent images and videos of children, with more than 300 depicting horrifying instances of abuse.
Disturbingly, investigators discovered that Torres-Vargas had been engaging in discussions about child sexual abuse with multiple individuals.
The gravity of his offenses led to Torres-Vargas being sentenced to 10 years in prison on December 19. He pleaded guilty to arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offense, as well as three counts each of distributing and making indecent photographs of children.
Upon release, Torres-Vargas will face an additional five years on extended licence, coupled with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Detective Sergeant Craig Dixon emphasized the severity of Torres-Vargas’s actions, stating, “He poses a significant risk of serious sexual harm to children.” Dixon hopes that the sentence sends a clear message about the gravity with which such offenses are treated.
