A chicken shop in Manor Park has lost its late licence after it ignored instructions not to employ illegal immigrant. The Eye Of Media.Com heard that the illegal immigrant had been caught working there twice before.
Newham Council’s licensing committee heard Zahid Hussain was arrested for a third time after police raided Dixy Chicken in Manor Park on the Romford Road.
During the raid on April 17, PC Colin Hunt said another worker “refused to engage” with officers” saying they would have to “nick him” if they wanted his information. Hussain, a Pakistani-national, had previously been arrested during two earlier raids, the Newham Council’s Committee heard. Licence holder Raja Mohammed Salis offered as a defence to the committee that he had sold the business in January 2017 but had “forgotten” to transfer the licence. He added: “It is nothing to do with me.” However, the Committee did not believe him and concluded that he had permitted, either knowingly or inadvertently, the illegal immigrant to continue to work at the shop despite being aware that the employee was illegal and not allowed to work.
Transfer of license following a business sale is a standard expectation of all license owners, Hussain’s defence was believed to be fabricated, so it was given no merit at all. On Tuesday, the committee revoked the shop’s licence, meaning food cannot be served there after 11pm .An application to transfer the licence to another operator was rejected in June and the decision is currently under appeal. As a consequence of the license withdrawal, the shop will now loose over £2,000 a week, and watch its rivals continue to enjoy their late licenses, especially over the weekend when customers often flood chicken shops on their way to and from night clubs. Many Dixon Shops have been accused and caught for undercutting British workers by employing illegal immigrants for far less than they would pay t British worker at the minimum wage.
When caught, such shops end up loosing far money money than they would have imagined, all in pursuit of saving costs.
