A man from China has decided to keep his $30 million lottery win from his wife and kid because he reckons knowing about the cash would make them lazy.
The anonymous winner, using the pseudonym of Li, to prevent his family seeing his real name published alongside the jackpot, bought 40 lottery tickets for the draw.
According to a report in Nanning Evening News, all seven numbers hit, equalling a payout of 5.48 million yuan per ticket, which means the total arrived at just under 220 million yuan.
The man went to the Guangxi Welfare Lottery Distribution Centre in the region’s capital city of Nanning to receive his prize money on October 24. Li also donated 5 million yuan to charity
Li bought 40 tickets using the same seven numbers for each so when those seven numbers came up he won big.
He picked the tickets up in the Chinese province of Guangxi Zhuang for 80 yuan (£9.50).
The overjoyed man has donated 5 million yuan (£600k) to charity but has insisted against informing his family of the good fortune.
He said: “I have not told my wife or kid. I am concerned that they might feel superior to other people and will not work or study hard in [the] future.”
“I worry that they will now feel superior to others and will not want to work hard or study for school in the future,” Li said, according to the report. Li will take home a total of around 23.6 million euros from his lottery win. On site, the lucky winner donated almost 700,000 euros to charity and had to pay six million euros in taxes.
“I only won a few dozen yuan in the past,” Li was quoted as saying.
“I regard buying the lottery as a hobby, and my family does not care. Plus, I do not spend much money on it, and the lottery provides a ray of hope for me.

It is not uncommon for lottery winners in China to accept their big prize hidden in costumes provided by the lottery operator. In September 2019, a winner accepted his €21 million prize money dressed as a pig, while in early 2016 the winner of a €40 million jackpot was dressed in a monkey costume.
He couldn’t hide how nervous Li was about winning the lottery. He found out on October 21st that he had won the jackpot and couldn’t sleep. The following day he traveled to Nanning, the seat of the lottery company, and had to wait two more days for the check to be handed over, during which he did not leave his hotel room – out of concern that he might lose his lottery ticket.
Hiding his big lottery prize from his wife could eventually become a problem for Li. A lawyer told Jiupai News that hiding the jackpot could violate Chinese marriage law. Because it says in there Article 13that possessions accumulated by both during the marriage count as joint possessions.
PHis story is similar to that of a woman who She scooped over £480,000 on the lotto back in August 2014, just two months before she wed her childhood sweetheart Mike.
She kept the big win away from her husband because has a tendency to spend on things we don’t need and that aren’t going to benefit us in the long run so I didn’t want our money to be blown quickly on stupid stuff like cars and clothes.
“I opened a new bank account with a national credit union and put the check in.
