Unvaccinated Austrians are just days away from a first lockdown , after record infections were reported across the country, in what could set a disturbing precedent for the rest of the world.
Upper Austria province will impose restrictions from Monday if it gets the approval from the federal government in a move that could set a precedent for other countries to folow suit. Salzburg also plans new measures.
Since monday this week, new rules took effect barring unvaccinated people who haven’t recovered from an infection from restaurants, hotels, hairdressing salons and large public events.
The argument in favour of such a move is to prevent individuals who refuse to keep others safe by being vaccinated , from infecting others.
The downside to the plans of a lockdown targeted at unvaccinated Austrians is that it would mark the beginning of potentially excessive control by governments, which could adopt the idea in a bid to drive up vaccination levels, and coerce unvaccinated people to comply with expectations to be vaccinated .
Double vaccination has been highlighted as the necessary step to prevent the spread of infections and death, but the world is divided on this matter .
Agenda
Critics of the vaccination drive believe it has an agenda besides the official line, and consider vaccinations potentially deadly, and dangerous.
An added concern that vaccines were developed in a very short time has been by numerous people.
However, scientists and governments say throrough checks and experiments have been conducted on vacicnes which make them generally safe, with a very small percentage of harmful experiences at below 1%.
The issue of vaccination and all that comes with it has been fiercely debated in the past by members of The Eye Of Media.Com’s thinktank on both sides of the argument – with supporters of each group generally seeing things from their angle.
Austria’s chancellor, Alexander Schallenberg,(pictured) said a national lockdown for the unvaccinated was “probably inevitable”, arguing that two-thirds of people should not suffer because others were hesitant, he said.
The move will mean unvaccinated people will be forced to stay at home, while those who have been double vaccinated are allowed to move around freely.
It will also highlight the need for vaccinated people to be able to prove their vaccinated status in public, should they be confronted by the authorities.
Concerns of a two tier society originally raised due to the idea of covid passports will be more real in a targeted lockdown of unvaccinated people, and will potentially be the first sign of extreme control imposed on a population due to covid.
Critics of the initiative have condemnd the idea as unworkable, but Austria’s government could still go ahead with the plans.
Upper Austria, which borders Germany and the Czech Republic and has a population of 1.5 million, has the country’s highest level of infection and the lowest vaccination rate.
Nationally, a record 11,975 Covid-19 infections were recorded in the past 24 hours and Austria’s coronavirus commission has warned of a threat that “must be taken seriously”.
The chancellor says this means that people who have not been vaccinated won’t be able to leave home, unless it is for essential reasons like going to work, buying food or exercise.
The world will wait to see how this particular lockdown works out.
