Ekleris was apprehended on August 19, 2022, upon his arrival at Immingham Dock from Cuxhaven, Germany. Acting on intelligence provided by the National Crime Agency (NCA), Border Force officers searched his vehicle and uncovered a staggering 60kg of cocaine concealed in a purpose-built compartment beneath the floor of his cab unit.
NCA investigators, in collaboration with the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau, obtained critical evidence against Ekleris. Phone conversations revealed that he was fully aware of the concealed packages, collected them from the supplier, and had received instructions on how to open the secret compartment.
After a trial at Grimsby Crown Court, Ekleris was found guilty by a jury on September 25, 2023. On January 4, 2024, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison at the same court. The NCA is actively supporting an ongoing investigation into the broader organized crime group in Lithuania connected to this case.
Carl Barrass, NCA Senior Investigating Officer, emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating drug supply chains, stating, “Class A drugs ruin lives, and we are determined to prevent individuals like Ekleris from fueling drug supply chains, causing untold harm to communities up and down the country.”
Danny Hewitt, Director of Border Force, commended the pivotal role played by Border Force officers in detecting and seizing millions of pounds worth of cocaine. He affirmed their dedication to ensuring public safety and securing the borders against the influx of dangerous drugs.
The successful collaboration between the NCA and Border Force underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to intercepting illicit drug shipments and holding those involved accountable for their actions.
The sentencing of Rimas Ekleris sends a strong message about the severe consequences awaiting individuals engaged in drug trafficking activities.
