By Ben Kerrigan-
The Labour Party will back a snap general election tonight, sending Brits to the polls before Christmas.
After the EU accepted Boris Johnson’s request for an extension, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn now considers a no deal off the table and is ready to urge the British public to back him against Johnson’s Tory Party.
A statement to the shadow cabinet this morning, Jeremy Corbyn said:
“I have consistently said that we are ready for an election and our support is subject to a No Deal Brexit being off the table.
“We have now heard from the EU that the extension of Article 50 to 31st January has been confirmed, so for the next three months, our condition of taking No Deal off the table has now been met.
“We will now launch the most ambitious and radical campaign for real change this country has ever seen”.
The Tory party has historically always done better than the Labour party when it comes to elections. The last time the Labour Party won a general election was in 1997 with a landslide majority of 179; it was the largest Labour majority ever, and at the time the largest swing to a political party achieved since 1945.
Labour rose to power under Harold Wilson in 1964–1970 , and again in 1974–1979 under Wilson and then James Callaghan.
