John Swinney took the oath to become the new First Minister of Scotland, succeeding his predecessor in a pivotal moment for the nation.
Presided over by Scotland’s most senior judge, Lord President Lord Carloway, the ceremony marked the official transition of power as Mr. Swinney assumed his role as the head of government.
Accompanied by his family, including his wife Elizabeth, brother David, and 13-year-old son Matthew, Mr. Swinney solemnly raised his right hand and bowed his head as he made his statutory declarations, assuming the title of First Minister and Keeper of the Scottish Seal.
Reflecting on the significance of the moment, Mr. Swinney described it as “overwhelming,” expressing his pride in assuming the mantle of leadership and acknowledging the unwavering support of his family.
Addressing reporters after the ceremony, Mr. Swinney affirmed his commitment to the role, emphasizing his dedication to serving the people of Scotland. He also reiterated his pledge to uphold his word regarding former finance secretary Kate Forbes, indicating that she would indeed have a role in his Cabinet as previously discussed.
Mr. Swinney’s ascent to the position of First Minister follows an unopposed selection process within the SNP leadership, culminating in his unanimous election at Holyrood.
Pledging to prioritize key issues such as education, healthcare, climate action, and poverty eradication, he underscored the importance of collaboration across party lines to achieve meaningful progress for the nation.
