An Italian base jumper tragically recorded his own death live on Facebook as he took off at Kandersteg in the Swiss Alps.
The 28 year old Italian, named as Armin Schmieder, filmed himself wearing a pair of sunglasses and a helmet, and smiling to the camera
repeatedly , before telling his Facebook friends “today you will fly with me”
He then put his recording device in his pocket, and is seen jumping into a read and blue wingsuit before leaping off from the parachute, after giving viewers a glimpse of the mountains on film.
The impact of the crash and a loud scream is heard before a long eery silence. Some of his Facebook friends later asked him to write something, the Zurich Bilk Newspaper reports.
Base jumping is one of the most dangerous recreational sports in the world, but one which has a number of enthusiasts who indulge in the very risky activity.
Risky activities like base jumping should be avoided like the plague, as life has enough dangers in itself without adding to the potentially self inflicting harm caused by the love of an activity loaded with life threatening risks.
Yet, the inherent risks involved in base jumping remains one of the main thrills of the activity. Deaths arising from base diving and similarly risky activities have been reported several times over the years.
This hasn’t stopped people from taking the risks as they shortsightedly put their trust in the leaky protective measures that supposedly keeps them safe.
Adding to the pain of the tragedy are reports that Schmieder ‘s mother and brother were among the several Facebook friends watching the base diving daredevil’s fatal adventure.
His mother is reported to have asked “What happened”. Sadly, the answer is that the adventure was fatal. If only they had warned him against the activity altogether. Maybe they did, and he didn’t listen.
Unfortunately, Armin Schmieder is not the first and will not be the last to die from this dangerous activity.
