Ilford Town Centre is set to have a cigarette smoke-free zone after Redbridge Council initiated the idea as part of its regeneration plans.
However, the Council said it has no plans to enforce the no-smoking zone. Rather, it plans to rely on the “goodwill of residents and visitors” to make the measure work.
Councillor Mark Santos, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care, Mental Health & the Ageing, said: “Reducing the number of people smoking in Redbridge is still very high on the public health agenda.
“There are currently plans in place to implement a voluntary smoke-free zone in Ilford Town Centre – a simple measure that will complement the overall regeneration programme for the town centre.
“The approach will rely on the goodwill of residents and visitors to be civic-minded, by not smoking in designated areas.”
The idea will be welcome by none smokers in the area, but because the council has no plans to enforce it, it is likely for smokers to ignore the spirit of the idea and just smoke anyway. There are an estimated 7 million smokers in the Uk and 300,000 smokers in Redbridge. Smoking is known to be one of the biggest causes of lung cancer. .’
