Contact tracing is to begin in the White House after president Trump and his wife tested positive for the coronavirus., and could change the dynamics of the U.S elections.
If it turns out that too many of Trump’s key aides have contracted the virus, it could mean a whole lot of people self isolating while Joe Bidden continues to build his fan base. Covid-19 rules will not be changed even for the president and his team, but it could weaken confidence in his leadership especially if his condition deteriorates.
So far, the president looks fine, but this could change any day. A more frightening scenario for the president will be if more top players in his team fall ill from the virus. It could spell disaster for a president who is already trailing Joe Bidden in the polls.
Exactly how far the coronavirus infection has spread in the top ranks of US leadership following the positive test of Donald Trump, is now a subject of investigation. Epidemiologists say the news suggests he could have been infectious at that time.
The positive testing of Covid-19 for Trump and his wife, will lead to be many more questions. More so, as he had attended a number of political rallies and White House meetings with Congress. It is also feared that democratic candidate, Joe Biden, who stood a few metres away from Trump for the 90 minutes debate could have been exposed to the virus, but only factual confirmation rather than guess work matters with respect to Biden.
Other high state officials to be tested include vice-president, Mike Pence, the White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, Trump’s pick for the supreme court, Amy Coney Barrett, and the Senate Republicans they visited this week to prepare for Barrett’s confirmation hearings.
Trump’s children and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, along with other senior White House staffers who accompanied Trump from Washington to the Cleveland debate and back, are also to be tested for Covid-19, sources say.
Trump was subjected to an urgent test after his close aid, Hope Hicks tested positive on Wednesday when he began to feel unwell at a Trump rally in Minnesota.
The president’s doctor, Navy Commander Dr Sean Conley, said in a statement early on Friday: “The president and first lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.
“The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions. Rest assured, I expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering.”
The Covid test result for Trump means he will have to abandon the rallies he normally attend to strengthen his support base. Trump could be forced to temporarily transfer power to the vice-president, Mike Pence, under the 25th amendment of the US constitution if he becomes severely ill.
Critics have been quick to point out that President Trump has always played down the seriousness of the virus, recently suggesting that it would disappear soon. Most members of the mainstream media are eager to see Trump loose the fast approaching election on November 3, because of many of an attitude in general considered to be tasteless, flippant, and irresponsible.
His recent reluctance to condemn white supremacist groups in America during his televised debate alarmed many observers after he told the widely disapproved ‘Proud Boys’ group to stand back and standby-comments that inspired the group to see that as an official endorsement of their wider objectives.
Pressure
The president later gave into pressure and asked them to ”stand down”, but those comments were seen to have come too late. Trump’s first televised presidential debate against Bidden was condemned as being ugly and undignified, but many members of The Eye Of Media.Com I spoke to on phone were in agreement that he won the debate, despite the unfavourable media report he received.
Bullied
Bidden seemed bullied, less confident, and looked like one fighting to come out of his shell. The general dislike of Trump is considered by objective experts who assessed the debate as an explanation for the negative press Trump received for the debate. His frequent interruptions was not one bit appealing, but how the election develops in the wake of the news he has Covid-19 will be clearer as the days and weeks go by.
