ITV has implemented round-the-clock security measures for Holly Willoughby, co-presenter of This Morning, following alarming charges against a 36-year-old man who allegedly plotted to kidnap and murder the beloved TV personality.
The shocking news unfolded when Holly Willoughby, 42, withdrew from her role on the ITV show This Morning on Thursday. Reports suggest that her London residence is now under police guard in light of the concerning developments.
Essex police announced on Friday that Gavin Plumb, 36, residing in Potters Field, Harlow, has been charged with soliciting to commit murder and incitement to commit kidnap. Plumb is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court later in the day.
The story, first reported by The Sun comes a month after the television presenter was reported to have taken time out ITV’s This Morning programme, following the Phil Schofield Scandal.
Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby of the Essex and Kent Serious Crime Directorate stated: “This was an extremely fast-paced investigation, with many of our officers and national partners working overnight to secure these charges.
The safeguarding of any victim is paramount, and we will continue to prioritize this and work with the Metropolitan Police Service as the investigation proceeds.”
The suspect, Gavin Plumb, is not known to Holly Willoughby, according to reports by the Sun.
This Morning producers were alerted to the alleged plot on Thursday morning, prompting Willoughby’s decision to step down from her presenting duties shortly before her scheduled appearance. Josie Gibson, the show’s co-host, was joined by Alison Hammond, who replaced the 42-year-old without providing an explanation for Willoughby’s absence.
A spokesperson for ITV expressed the network’s support, stating, “This news has come as a huge shock to everyone at This Morning and ITV. We are providing all the support we can to Holly and her family at this incredibly distressing time.”
The incident was briefly addressed by Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond at the start of This Morning on Friday, with O’Leary stating, “We are not going to talk too much about it, but Holly is on the front pages after police arrested a 36-year-old man over an alleged kidnap plot.
He has now been charged by Essex police.” Hammond added, “We are obviously all shocked to hear the news and we want to send our love and biggest hugs to Holly and her family.”
ITV has reportedly taken immediate action to ensure the safety of Holly Willoughby, providing round-the-clock security and support, in collaboration with the local authorities, at her family home, where she resides with her husband and three children.
The motive behind the alleged plot remains unknown as investigations continue.
