A 71-year-old landlord has been charged with murder and hate crimes after allegedly stabbing a six-year-old boy to death because of his Muslim faith.
The accused, Joseph Czuba, is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated battery. This horrific act of violence has not only taken a young life but also shed light on the lingering hate crimes that continue to haunt communities.

Joseph Czuba targeted his tenants, 32-year-old Hanaan Shahin and her six-year-old son, Wadea Al-Fayoume(pictured). In a brutal and unprovoked attack, Czuba inflicted multiple stab wounds on both victims, leaving them in a state of shock and horror.
Hanaan Shahin, the child’s mother, was able to escape to the bathroom and call the police despite suffering more than a dozen stab wounds. While she is expected to survive, the young boy, Wadea Al-Fayoume, was not as fortunate.
He endured more than two dozen stab wounds in this senseless act of violence, and he later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Wadea had just celebrated his birthday a few weeks before this tragic incident. His untimely death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family and the community.

A Community in Mourning
The community of Plainfield and beyond have come together in mourning the loss of young Wadea Al-Fayoume. As the news spread, many are left in disbelief at the violent attack that took such an innocent life. Eva Case, a neighbor, expressed the collective sentiment, saying, “I don’t care what the situation was. Don’t take it out on somebody that innocent of life.”
Wadea Al-Fayoume’s father, Oday al-Fayoume, who was present at a recent news conference, remains in a state of shock, unable to comprehend the brutal act that claimed his son’s life.
