Germany has imposed tough draconian restrictions on individuals not to leave their homes without good reason as part of their new restrictions aimed at slowing down the spread of coronavirus.
Chancellor Angela Merkel announced new measures on Sunday aimed at controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus in Germany. The measures include of more than two people and a minimum distance of at least 1.5 metres from other people. The announcement comes as British prime minister, Boris Johnson, threatened tougher measures on the British people if they failed to respect the guidelines he has set in relation to social distancing.
The measures in Germany will initially last for two weeks, can vary between individual states. Individuals who go out without carrying their ID on them could face a fine from police if they’re outside with no good reason.
The “contact restrictions” (Kontaktbeschränkungen) stipulate that all residents in Berlin must stay “permanently in their flat or usual accommodation” and only leave the house for essential activities such as shopping for food, helping a sick relative or exercise.
Other activities are permitted such as working in an allotment garden, walking the dog or making necessary appointments with authorities. Berlin mayor Michael Müller was keen to point out that “social life must be possible and children have to get some fresh air”. The goal, however, is to reduce social contact in the population to stall the spread of COVID-19.
“We will continually evaluate the current situation,” said Müller.
