During a press conference, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that in most German states people who do not wear face coverings in public will be fined $59 and that large gatherings, including concerts and sporting events, will be banned until the end of the year.
Travellers returning to Germany from high risk countries areas will be required to self-isolate for at least five days before being allowed to take a coronavirus test.
The ban was agreed on during a video conference attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of the country’s 16 states — the first such meeting since June 17.
Merkel stressed after the meeting that “all in all, it is fair to say that we have come through this pandemic well so far. Nevertheless, we can see that the number of infections has risen in recent weeks.”
“We take this increase in these summer months very seriously,” she added.
Other measures include a minimum fine of €50 ($60) for anyone caught not wearing a mask in shops and on public transport.
Protest Ban
In a show of political and legal might, authorities banned a protest against the country’s coronavirus restrictions set to take place this weekend. Germany is not prepared to risk the virus spreading further die to protests from dissenting voices.
Cases of COVID-19 have been on the rise across Germany recently and have increased to levels not seen since the end of April. Health officials report more than 240,590 cases of the virus in the country, and more than 9,290 people have died.
