Tyson Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, has promised British fans that a heavyweight division unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk “will be made”. The promise comes after Ukrainian Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua on points in a much anticipated rematch on Saturday, retaining his WBA, IBF and WBO titles.
Fury recently said he plans to stay in retirement but after of Usyk’s victory he posted a video saying: “I would annihilate both of them [Usyk and Joshua] on the same night … get your fucking chequebook out.”
Warren told BBC Radio 5 live on Monday: “He and Usyk would be a really good fight. It’s a fight that I think will be made because both teams would like to see that happen.
“Usyk said after the fight that it’s the only fight he’s interested in and it’s certainly the same case with Tyson. It’s just a matter of where it will generate the most income because it’s a unique fight, a historic fight.
“It’s the first time for God knows how long that the four belts are on the line. Both fighters are undefeated. The whole world of boxing will be captivated by this fight.”
Warren also suggested that a potential all-British clash between Fury and Joshua, although made clear that Joshua would need a few good wins first to attract any legitimate interest in a clash with Fury. He said: “If AJ manages to get a couple of wins under his belt, and I believe Tyson will beat Usyk, that may be a fight to be made,” he said. “But AJ’s got to re-establish himself before you can even think about fights like that.”
Joshua’s second loss to Usyk means he has already been written off by British fans, and will be considered as having no chance against the unbeaten gypsy king, who is currently rated the best in the heavyweight division.
Undisputed heavyweight world champion: Olegsander Usyk
Fury has several times declared his retirement, but knows that his claim to be the best of his generation will be challenged in the future if he never unifies the belts.
A heavyweight unification fight featuring two unbeaten talents will be the first in many decades, and produce one main champion for the first time in many years.
Klitschko was the last undisputed heavyweight champion, and reigned for 11 years before he was defeated by Tyson Fury in 2015.
Fury will be favourite with the bookies to beat Usyk, and although bookies often get it right, they don’t always do so. The bookies were right in tipping Usyk to beat Joshua for a second time.
