The Uk Deputy Permanent Representative of the U.N, James Kaluki,(pictured) has called for joint effort to prevent Russia from annexing Ukraine, a sovereign territory of its own.
His desperate request is a tall order in the face of a dictatorship regime like Russia, bent on its political objective of annexing Ukraine. Any serious intervention to obstruct whatever Russia has planned, risks escalating tensions in the war. Russia has already threatened to use nuclear weapons if it decides too, a move the U.S has said would have serious consequences.
With the war heightening in its intensity, making right judgements remains a challenge. Russia is an established bully without legal or ethical principles, but the Uk government and its allies have standards it will also be judged by. It must not be reckless in its approach to the growing crises in Ukraine.
Wide sanctioning of Russian oligarchs and the continuous announced financial support to aid the war has made Putin ever determined to have his way, following setbacks in the war to Russia. Putin his lost over 15,000 soldiers.
Putin’s regime has adopted its typical violent and dishonourable antics in order to try to ensure its victory in Ukraine.
Its holding of a sham referenda in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions of Ukraine has been condemned as an egregious violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and of the principles of the UN Charter.
The United Nations has declared the abhorrent process as both illegal and illegitimate.
Notorious
Russia is notorious for proceeding towards selfish political objectives under false pretences. Its failure to observe Human Rights Laws for decades, and to easily commit breaches of its international obligations, has forever stained Russia’s political integrity with the world.
It is never too late to change and conform to international standard, but this will take a remarkable U turn. The Russian government is all about arbitrary rule.
The Uk government has presented Russia’s propaganda effort aimed at justifying Russia’s illegal presence on sovereign Ukrainian territory as ”shameless”.
The Uk said that the unfolding developments in Ukraine relating to the dodgy referendums are a reflection of Russia’s referendum playbook seen before in Crimea, through disinformation, intimidation and fabrication.
These are regions that voted overwhelmingly to join an independent Ukraine in 1991 and to back President Zelenskyy in 2019.
Russia’s control in these regions has been through violence, torture, filtration and forced deportation.
The sight of soldiers with automatic rifles accompanying the ballots as they move from door to door, forcing Ukrainians to take part has alarmed the Uk government
The Uk government pointed out that referenda held under conditions at the barrel of a gun, can never be remotely close to free or fair.
And the very idea that a referendum on a fundamental question could be held at three days’ notice in the middle of a war zone is frankly farcical.
He called for the unequivocal rejection of these illegitimate actions and Russian attempts to illegally annex Ukrainian territory and support the draft resolution the US and Albania have brought forward today.
