BY LUCY CAULKETT-
Drug dealer, Amber Muggleton, 23, from Queens Park, has appealed to the Court of Appeal to release her to care for her disabled partner.
Amber Muggleton sentenced to two years after selling MDMA to undercover police officers at the Boomtown festival near Winchester in 2014 admitted supplying the drug and possessing it with intent to supply and was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court in August.
Lawyers on her behalf told the Court of Appeal that her girlfriend described her as ‘her arms, legs, body, and brain’. But those sentiments fell on deaf ears as Judge Jeremy Carey declared her crimes too serious to justify allowing her appeal and freeing her.
Freedom would have meant she can go back on the streets and sell MDMA. MDMA is a drug used by many party goers as it gives them a real high and keeps them away. Many users complain of the surreal feeling of joy under the spell of the drug which is offset by a really bad come down eventually. Users are usually left with the white looking powder hanging down their nostrils like 3-year-old kids whilst they get up to all sort of naughtiness depending on their tendencies.
Like most drugs, it is harmful to the health, but dealers are only concerned about the demand and supply side of things. The fact that they can supply a drug people demand is all that matters to them, not the potential effects of the drug itself especially if the dealer is a user themselves.
TROUBLED CHILDHOOD
Astonishingly, a troubled childhood in which she lost her father and had to cope with a mum with mental health difficulties was tendered in court as mitigating circumstances in her defense. In addition to this was the fact she had always been there for her mother and acted as the parent figure to her younger brother. In fairness, an unfortunate background such as this would have an impact on the life and future of many individuals. Life seems to have dealt her a bad card. Irrespective of this, the marks of a wise and tough individual lies in the way the reverse a negative trend and push forward to set a new standard in their family line.
Her offenses were apparently connected with her own drug abuse which her lawyer said she had overcome whilst at a residential placement in Thailand. Right, how do we really know that? Yet, a fact presented in court was that she was indebted to drug dealers and therefore had to deal drugs in order to finance the repayment of those debts. Once those debts had been repaid, we are expected to believe the drug dealing would have ceased. Her imprisonment was stated to be heavily impacting the well-being of her disabled lover, who cannot cope without her.
Rejecting the impassioned plea for her release, Judge Carey said: “We conclude that the seriousness of her offending, in this case, was such that despite the powerful mitigation only immediate custody was justified.
“Nothing sufficiently substantial has been brought to our attention today which could properly allow us to take a different course.”
What a shame it was, but she really should have considered the welfare of her partner before indulging in drug dealing. Her unfortunate setback in her childhood is sad but had she chosen to be a serious, respectful girl in school, her life would have led a different path.
