An Essex Police officer is due to make his first appearance in court on a charge of misconduct in public office, following our investigation.
PC David Wren, 57, who is based at Clacton police station, will appear at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on 21 October.
The charge relates to an allegation that he formed an inappropriate sexual relationship with a woman, who was the victim of domestic abuse that he was investigating.
Our investigation began following a mandatory conduct referral from the force in September 2022.
According to Home Office statistics, of the criminal proceedings involving police officers (where the verdict is known[footnote 32]), 159 (70%) resulted in the officer being found (or pleading) guilty and 32 (14%) resulted in a not guilty verdict. A further 29 (13%), proceedings were discontinued, 2 (1%) were cautioned, and 4 (2%) resulted in no evidence offered.
There were 53 criminal proceedings involving staff, with 87% f them resulted in the individual being found (or pleading) guilty and one case (2%) resulted in a not guilty verdict. A further 3 (5%) proceedings were discontinued, one case (2%) was cautioned, and one case (2%) resulted in no evidence offered.
The college of policing recently revealed that in the past year, over 730 police officers have been dismissed from office for for dishonesty.
