Donald Trump was so shaken by violent demonstrations in front of the White House, that he hid in a White House bunker as hundreds of people protesting against the death of George Floyd gathered outside, throwing rocks and tugging at police barricades.
The US president apparently spent almost an hour being sheltered in the bunker, which is designed for use in emergencies such as terrorist attacks, as demonstrations over the death of Mr Floyd, an unarmed black man in police custody, raged across several cities in the US.
Trump has been criticised for fuelling the wide anger that has seen demonstrations in the U.S run wild in the past few days. Trump said ”when the looting starts, the shooting starts”.
Trump later attempted to provide a defence for his words, saying:”Looting leads to shooting, and that’s why a man was shot and killed in Minneapolis on Wednesday night – or look at what just happened in Louisville with 7 people shot. I don’t want this to happen, and that’s what the expression put out last night means….”
The disturbance follows other violent demonstrations across U.S cities after a white former police officer was filmed kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes during his arrest in Minneapolis for allegedly using a fake $20 note in a shop.
The former police officer involved in the incident, Derek Chauvin, who has been sacked, has now been charged with third degree murder.National Guard soldiers and airmen were brought in to deal with protests in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angelis, San Francisco.
There were reports in Sacramento of police firing rubber bullets at protesters. Derek Chauvin Filmed With His Knee On George Floyd
UK Protesters
Protesters also gathered in their thousands in the UK on Sunday were supporting Americans angry about violence suffered by black people at the hands of police in the U.S. London, protesters chanted: “No justice, no peace!” and waved placards saying “How many more?” referring to the list of black Americans who have died after encounters with police. Others shouted: “Get your knees off our necks.”
The fall out between the establishment and the people has deepened with this cruel killing, which is not the first of its kind in the U.S. It’s nature was different to the type of police brutality against black men that has rocked America in the past.
Only last October, police officer, Amber R. Guyger, who is white, was in the wrong apartment when she shot her neighbor, Botham Shem Jean, a 26-year-old black accountant who was watching television and eating ice cream in the apartment he rented directly above Ms. Guyger’s. She said she thought he was an intruder in her home. She was jailed for life for the murder of Mr. Jean
The multiple other incidents of unarmed black men who have been killed by police has no doubt left sour tastes in black communities. However, they are not be representative of the U.S police force.
Law Abiding
Records show that the American police are generally law abiding. They can be heavy handed, but those who illegally kill back people are in the minority. They have twisted minds. The records show that the vast majority of American cops do not recklessly kill anybody, but just carry out their duties.
There are a few bad cops with mental issues and a past characterised by racial tension. However, the vast majority obey the law.
The bad cops are largely the product of disturbed child hood.
There are many people who have been victims in school of bullies who are black and vice versa. Some are badly affected by their experiences and become extreme racists.
Some schools in America for instance, have white and black pupils play together in groups of their own race. This usually is a reflection of who they choose to identify with, but there are often different other reasons too.
Some of these crazy cops come from racist backgrounds, others are just some negative past experiences which they have not addressed psychologically, and realised they are not coloured based in their orientation
Others grow up being affiliated with extreme groups, and then slip into the police force unnoticed. Rooting out the bad cops is the mission the U.S Police Force have to do.
