Dominic Raab will take over from Boris Johnson after the prime minister was admitted to intensive care on Monday.
Raab had already been chosen in advance as the First Secretary Of State to assume the prime minister’s duties in any situation that found the prime minister unable to perform his ministerial functions. Raab who spoke of ”a strong spirit around the prime minister” expressed confidence in a compete team to execute the role of the prime minister whilst he is catered for.
Lord Kerslake, the former head of the civil service, said: “The government and the cabinet secretary have clearly identified Raab as the first minister but that was done some time back without any notion that it would come to this.
“Raab will step into the key functions such as chairing Cobra meetings and chairing cabinet. There will also have been general plans that would have been refined over the last few days since the prime minister’s illness became clear.” He will be expected to quickly adopt a strong position of leadership which would also require him to manage a team of other ministers, some of whom may not be on the same page as him as far as his vision for the coronavirus
Mr Raab may already know how the script for the process of the battle against this virus in terms of the testing and the timing of the end of the lockdown. Different ideas from other ministers could present a challenge for mr. Raab, but the fact he is the man to deputise for the prime minister means he will still be in charge in the absence of the prime minister.
